Holy Smoke #14
The fourteenth annual Holy Smoke Christian Grilling Competition was
held Saturday April 1, 2017 at the old school in the Centerpoint
community of Preston Ga. The event is sponsored by Macedonia Baptist
Church.
It was
a great day with sunshine and pleasant temperatures all day long. Fourteen
Christian oriented teams donated (thirteen competed) entry fees to the cause
for a total of $1,500.00 between them.
Gospel
singing began at 10:15 a.m. and lasted until 5 p.m. with well-known singers
from the surrounding area and as far away as Manchester Ga. Each of these
individuals or groups gave of their time to help in this mission project.
They were: (1st) Dayspring Trio, (2nd) Three
Generations , (3rd)Young Spirit, (4th)Truly Blessed,
(5th)Bubba Cobb, Harvey Wills & Robert Earl, (6th)
Russ Kern, and last but not least was Southern Sound.
Bar-B-Que
plates were sold for the noon and evening meals with all proceeds of the day
being divided equally between the Ga. Baptist Children’s home in Meansville
Ga. and the Methodist Children’s home in Americus.
After
the evening meal the judging totals were announced with trophies being given
for the first three places in each category and for Grand Champion.
The
Grand Champion of the 2017 BBQ competition (that included all entries
except cakes) was Shiloh Baptist Church with 1st & 2nd runners up
being Preston Baptist and Oakland Baptist, respectively.
The
evening ended with local auctioneer, Billy Black, auctioning off the cake
entries. This part of the event itself raised $2,830.00 and the
Grand Total that was divided equally between the Methodist Children's Home
in Americus and the Ga. Baptist Children's Home in Meansville was
$6,983.45 Slightly
less than last year's total but still a great day of fellowship and fun with
brothers and sisters in Christ.
We thank each of the cooking teams, singers, judges, workers and
supporters that made this year’s Holy Smoke another huge success.
We
also give a special thank you outside of the Macedonia family to Terry @
Adams Food Center for his continued support and to Paul Stull @ Sunrise
Graphics for the trophy decals and to Peggy Jo Scott from Richland Methodist
for running the judging room for us.
